NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC
For more than a century, National Geographic has mapped the unknown, charting not just continents, but the very edges of human curiosity.
So when the Society set out to reimagine that legacy for a digital generation, the challenge wasn’t about technology. It was about translation.
How do you take 135 years of exploration, wonder, and wisdom, and fit it into the palm of a hand?
We were invited to help answer that question. Together, we art-directed and designed three educational apps: MAPS The Complete Collection, MAPS The War Series, and Trip-Planner. Each crafted to capture the spirit of discovery that defined the brand. The interfaces were designed to feel intuitive yet vast, informative yet alive.
To make the maps more than static history, we produced 20 original short films, revealing the stories behind the maps: wars that reshaped borders, cultures that redrew them, and the explorers who dared to imagine what lay beyond.
What emerged wasn’t software. It was a digital expedition. The work went on to earn Best New Software Product of the Year at the SIIA CODiE Awards, and a place in the Smithsonian Institution’s permanent collection.
Because the measure of success wasn’t how beautifully it displayed the world. It was how deeply it rekindled the desire to explore it.
